Spotlight on "The Storm Front," Sauk Rapids-Rice Mobile Spirit Store.
At Resource Training & Solutions, we recognize the vital role that Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs play in preparing students for future careers. Through our CTE Grants, funded by the statewide Career and Technical Education Consortium Grant, we support innovative educational projects that foster career exploration, skill development, and real-world learning. A standout example of these grants in action is Sauk Rapids-Rice High School’s "The Storm Front: Sauk Rapids-Rice Mobile Spirit Store," an initiative that brings school pride and experiential learning on the road.
Bringing Learning to Life on Wheels
Spearheaded by Josh Bauer, Business and Marketing Teacher and DECA Advisor at Sauk Rapids-Rice High School, "The Storm Front" transforms an 8 x 20 trailer into a fully functioning retail space. "This project is entirely their vision," Bauer noted, “from the design to the day-to-day operations—it’s all in their hands.” The DECA students are responsible for marketing, merchandising, and customer service as they travel to different locations—including local schools and community events—to reach broader audiences and build school spirit. "We’re so excited to see the trailer become a hub for our school and community," said DECA member Emma Foy.
The hands-on nature of this project offers invaluable experience. For Emma, working on promotional materials and managing logistics has boosted her confidence in both design and communication. "Being involved in both buying and selling for this trailer is something I can carry forward,” she shared. “It’s given me a taste of the business world that I hope to be a part of one day." Fellow DECA student Grace Stark, who took on much of the design layout for the trailer, noted, "Seeing all the merchandise organized and creating a functional space has been a great preview of what a career in architecture could look like.”
Cross-Curricular Collaboration: A Comprehensive Learning Experience
This project exemplifies the power of cross-disciplinary collaboration. Students from the Industrial Technology program, led by teacher Jake Masters, were instrumental in building out the trailer’s interior. The DECA students worked closely with the industrial tech team to bring their vision to life, with feedback and guidance from both Masters and Laura Doverstein, the school’s Graphic Communications teacher. "Building social media posts and seeing how people interact with them has been so powerful," shared Hallie Buchert, a DECA student involved in creating and managing the social media marketing for the store. The students’ work has attracted significant attention, with one Instagram post reaching over 2,800 views and inspiring positive feedback from the community.
Beyond practical skills, this initiative also offers lessons in teamwork and resilience. As Bauer observed, "They push me—this is truly their project, their drive." From securing sponsorships to designing graphics and layouts, the students have gained valuable real-world skills. "Connecting with businesses, securing sponsorships, and managing customer needs has been an amazing experience," Grace added. "These are skills I’ll take with me, whether I end up in business or beyond.”
Building Community Connections
"The Storm Front" has strengthened the school’s ties with the broader community, making school spirit accessible and engaging for everyone. The students have brought their trailer to elementary schools and football games, where it’s become a fixture for school pride and community connection. "We’ve been at elementary schools and are excited to head to the middle school and other spots around town," said Hallie. The DECA team has actively promoted the mobile store, using Instagram and Facebook to engage with peers and families. "Seeing people share our posts shows just how powerful our efforts can be," she added.
This project has been a standout experience for each student involved, inspiring them to consider future careers in marketing, architecture, and beyond. "DECA has given me so many opportunities, but this project has probably been the most impactful," Emma shared. Grace echoed this sentiment, saying, "Bringing Mr. Bauer’s vision of a mobile store to life after years of planning has been incredible." Through "The Storm Front," the students have not only learned technical skills but also developed confidence, leadership, and a deeper connection to their community.
