Lifting Career Readiness Through Hands-On Auto Mechanics Training
With support from a CTE Equipment Mini-Grant from Resource Training & Solutions, Ogilvie Public Schools launched a brand-new auto mechanics program—complete with a vehicle lift and professional-grade toolbox. Led by Industrial Technology teacher Tanner Hagglund, this program is giving students the skills and confidence to explore careers in the automotive industry.

Building a Program from the Ground Up
To bring the new course to life, the school needed key equipment that would make hands-on learning possible. The grant funded the purchase of a mobile vehicle lift that stores easily and allows students to safely work under vehicles, along with a fully stocked tool chest for repairs and diagnostics.
A Practical Learning Experience
Students in grades 9–12 now have the opportunity to gain real-world experience performing both basic and advanced vehicle maintenance. From oil changes to diagnostic work, they’re learning on actual cars—including their own and those of school staff.
“These students are developing a strong foundation in automotive repair and diagnostics,” said Hagglund. “It’s a great way for them to explore a high-demand career before deciding to invest in formal training.”

Meeting Workforce Needs
As the demand for auto mechanics continues to rise, programs like this help fill the pipeline with skilled, career-ready workers. The course also empowers students with lifelong skills they can use to maintain their own vehicles.
A Grant with a Lasting Impact
In just its first year, the program is expected to serve 20 students—and it’s already generating interest across grade levels. With the support of the CTE Mini-Grant, Ogilvie Schools is creating opportunities that align with local workforce needs while transforming how students experience career and technical education.
